Zenkoji Temple

Zenkoji Temple is one of the most important temples in Japan and contains 1,400 years of history with in its compound. The area is considered a national treasure and is an important place of history, culture and architecture. Founded in the 7thcentury the temple contains the first ever Buddhist statue to be brought to Japan when the religion was first introduced to the country. The statue of Amitabha was buried in a moat by an anti-Buddhism group in the 6thcentury and later recovered and enshrined in Zenkoji Temple. Today a replica statue is on display to the public and the real one is shown every 6 years.

Naena Waterfall

Naena Waterfall is an impressive 55m waterfall. It is framed by a steep basalt wall on each side and the thundering water crashes on to the large boulders below. In spring the snow melt from the mountain flows down and causes the volume of water to increase dramatically. The amount of water that comes down at this time is truly impressive. The thundering noise of the water and the spray from the waterfall is almost frightening as you cross the bridge in front of it. Naena waterfall is beautiful all year round and looks drastically different in each season.

Togakusi

Togakusi

Togakushi Shrine consists of a lower, a middle and an upper shrine in the forested mountains northwest of Nagano's city center. The shrines are related to an important story in Japanese mythology in which the Sun Goddess hid herself in a cave in present day Takachiho on Kyushu after her brother had misbehaved, thereby bringing darkness to the world.In order to get the sunlight back, the other deities tried to lure the Sun Goddess out of the cave by performing spectacular dance performances in front of it. As the Sun Goddess took a peek out, one of the deities grabbed the cave's stone door and threw it away to prevent her from hiding again. The stone door flew all the way to Togakushi in Nagano Prefecture, which is also how the area got its name: Togakushi literally means "hiding door".

Umigatari Joetsu Aquarium

Umigatari Joetsu Aquarium was fully rebuilt and reopened in 2018. It now the best aquarium in Niigata and one of the few places in Japan where you can see beluga whales and great numbers of magellanic penguins.One of the major highlights is the magellanic penguin area where the birds freely roam, and you can walk through their area with no glass separating you from them. If you are there during a feeding time you can help to feed the penguins by dropping fish into their pool.

Lake Nojiri

Lake Nojiri is a part of the Myoko Togakushi Renzan National Park. The lake lies just across the border of Myoko in Shinanomachi in Nagano Prefecture. The lake is a 5-minute drive from Myoko and is easily with in cycling distance. There is a route around the whole lake which makes it an excellent area to cycle. Situated in the middle of the lake is Biwa Island. On the island is Uga Shrine which was founded in 730AD. The main sanctuary area of the shrine was constructed in 1655. The island can be reached by the small ferry that travels the lake or you can canoe or peddle boat out to the island.
